Five Ways Location-Based Services Will Bring Smart Cities to Life

Singapore, 11th February 2015W-Locate, a location-based services and Smart Cities specialist, today announced its trends on the evolution of the 21st century Smart City. This is based on the ongoing discussions the company is currently having with operators, businesses and government bodies. With M2M, telematics and the Internet of Things (IoT) set to make cities smarter, W-Locate has outlined five key characteristics that will shape the future of smart cities.

  1. Improved responses times for emergency services with increased indoor and outdoor tracking

Emergency services response times will improve dramatically in tomorrow’s Smart Cities. With better indoor and outdoor location technology from hybrid solutions, emergency first responders will know exactly where they need to be. This will not only increase health care provision but could play a major role in lowering crime rates too.

  1. Smarter city planning

Smart Cities of the future will not organically evolve as current large conurbations have. With the use of population density heat maps, governments and local authorities can intelligently design city infrastructure. Public transport managers will also use heat maps to plan and update routes to better match the actual – and future – needs of commuters.

  1. Improved energy consumption

With energy consumption continuing to be a big issue, Smart Cities will efficiently and dynamically monitor and alter their power usage. With knowledge and understanding of people’s habits and location, cities will know when, what and where power can be saved as demand fluctuates and changes over the course of a day.

  1. Combating fraud

Smart Cities will play a crucial role in the fight against fraud. With the launch of initiatives like GSMA’s OneAPI, and further improvements in location-based technology, banks and credit card companies can use location data as an extra form of verification on transactions. Knowing where their customers are and where transactions are taking place will help prevent fraud, leading to billions of dollars each year in savings.

  1. Safer cities

With the high financial and time costs, tracking individuals who pose a security risk is currently a difficult task. New hybrid location tracking technologies that can accurately track individuals in both indoor and outdoor environments will provide the security services with a new tool in protecting people and keeping cities safer.

Stevie Ooi, CEO of W-Locate commented: “From our consultations with government bodies, city planners and mobile network operators we’ve seen a number of trends around Smart City emerging. Smart Cities will be safer, more power efficient and better designed than anything we have seen . Many of these improvements will come from location-based services and the data they provide. In particular new hybrid, SIM-based LBS solutions that can provide both indoor and outdoor location data from any SIM card will revolutionize the cities we live in.”

He continued: “Our own SIM-based LBS solution XimLoc was developed with these needs in mind. As it is highly scalable, customizable and has support for 3rd party APIs, XimLoc is future proofed and ready for deployment in Smart Cities around the world.”

From the 2nd-5th March at Mobile World Congress, W-Locate will be showcasing its SIM-based LBS solution XimLoc. With live demonstrations including:

  • A Live heat map from Singapore showing how the population move across the island nation throughout the day
  • Live tracking of real individuals at work in Singapore
  • How XimLoc provides peace of mind to millions of parents and guardians in China

AIS and W-Locate Deliver M2M with SIM-Based Enterprise LBS Solution

Thailand’s largest operator brings Wireless M2M services to enterprise users

15 October, 2014 (SINGAPORE) – Thailand’s largest mobile operator, AIS, today announced the launch of Mobile Track and Trace, one of the world’s first enterprise-specific SIM-based location-based service (LBS) solutions. Powered by W-Locate’s XimLoc, Mobile Track and Trace brings improved indoor tracking and M2M capabilities to AIS corporate subscribers.

Mobile Track and Trace offers AIS’ business customers accurate outdoor and indoor location-based services to enable the development of products for advertising, promotions and the tracking of high-value goods.

With XimLoc, operators can provide location-based services from their own networks, with minimal CAPEX and provides increased Return on Investment. XimLoc runs as an algorithm on a mobile device’s SIM card, so operators do not have addition investment in costly new hardware. This means that XimLoc has an extremely short lead-time, providing operators an immediate and manageable entry into M2M-based service provisioning. Operators can also incorporate SMS notifications into the solution with additional customizable options to secure new revenue streams.

“The enterprise sector has been a focus of AIS for a while now,” said Somchai Lertsutiwong, CEO of AIS. “As a result, we only want to offer services that we know will deliver a business benefit to our customers. The collaboration with W-Locate and XimLoc highlights our commitment to deliver the highest quality service to our customers by developing strong relationships with leading partners. What we saw in XimLoc was a solution that markedly improves on the indoor capabilities of current GPS-based LBS tracking solutions. This key feature is helping us expand our business services portfolio.”

“We are proud to have partnered with AIS to develop Mobile Track and Trace for its business customers,” said Stevie Ooi, CEO of W-Locate. “In the next couple of years, the LBS M2M market is going to be hugely important for mobile network operators as they look to expand their enterprise focus. A SIM-based solution such as XimLoc not only opens up better indoor tracking capabilities, but also enables operators to play a defining role in the evolution of the wireless M2M market.”

FIND is remote vehicle diagnostics, incident detections systems, and fleet operation management all rolled into one. FIND is currently adopted by more than 2000 vehicles, of which many of these fleet owners are MNCs and large public listed enterprises in Singapore and Malaysia.

First in the world, XimLoc delivers a SIM-Based tracking system that can accurately track any mobile handset in both indoor and outdoor locations. XimLoc is a proprietary technology, which uses information and signals that are available from the GSM (2G/3G) network to compute positions. XimLoc uses an applet (that resides in a SIM card) to send back to a backend XimLoc server, which will calculate the most probable location based on WLC’s Patent-Pending algorithm. XimLoc has been vigorously tested and has been proven to be as accurate as GPS while addressing the limitations of GPS, i.e. inability to track indoor and heavy power consumption. W-Locate expect XimLoc to be deployed heavily for workforce tracking in Asia. XimLoc has already secured 2 major telecommunications companies to launch its services in South East Asia.
